Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment

SCOPE, established by the International Council for Science (ICSU) in 1969, is an interdisciplinary body of natural and social science expertise focused on global environmental issues, operating at the interface between scientific and decision-making instances.  It consists of a worldwide network of scientists and scientific institutions developing syntheses and reviews of scientific knowledge on current or potential environmental issues.

International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme

IGBP, established by ICSU in 1986, is an international scientific research program that brings together researchers from biology, physics, chemistry, geology and other disciplines to undertake a study of global change in the context of the Earth System.

IGBP's goal is to undertake a systems analysis of planetary composition and dynamics, focusing on the interactive physical, chemical and biological processes that define Earth System dynamics, the changes that are occurring in these dynamics, and the role of human activities in these changes.   The INI is a Fast Track Project within the IGBP.

VROM

The Dutch Ministry for Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment supports international cooperation in dealing with nitrogen problems.

There are two main reasons for stimulating international cooperation on this subject. First, reactive nitrogen is transported on different geographic scales, ranging from regional, to continental and global. The transboundary nature of the problem calls for international coordinated action to reduce the emissions. Second, countries can benefit from each other's experience in dealing with nitrogen related problems.

The Netherlands is involved in promoting international discussion and collaboration on this subject by supporting the international nitrogen conferences and the International Nitrogen Initiative.
