International Nitrogen Initiative

As a first step in the assessment process, priority is given to the initiation of regional nitrogen (nutrient) assessments.

EUROPE - The European INI center is now involved in finalizing the European Nitrogen Assessment (due for publication 2011), more information about ENA is available on http://www.nine-esf.org/node/204.

SOUTH and EAST ASIA - The South and East Asian INI centers started discussions about a regional nitrogen assessment, first at the East Asian meeting held in 8th of September 2009 in Nanjing, China and further discussed at the joint meeting of South/East Asia Region which was held in 21-23 June 2010, New Delhi, India.

AFRICA - The African INI center started a Rapid nitrogen assessment. The center is currently communicating with leading authors of the main chapters. In addition, a workshop is planned for fall –winter 2010-2011, which will be a basis for cross-cutting chapters.

NORTH AMERICA - A first meeting to develop a plan for a North American Nitrogen Assessment took place in Boulder, Colorado, United States on 18-20 May 2010. It was suggested to put nitrogen under the umbrella of the Global Change Assessment and it was determined that the process will have two stages – first focus on nitrogen and climate and second integrate the nitrogen assessment.
