Whim bog – N manipulation study
Lamancha, the Scottish Borders, NT204532
The Whim Bog site is a unique field experiment, coupled to real time meteorology, to compare the effects of gaseous ammonia and wet deposited ammonium and nitrate on an ombrotrophic bog in an area with low ~ 8 kg N ha(-1)y(-1) ambient N deposition.
In 2002, a free air release system, coupled to wind direction, was established to create a gradient of ammonia concentrations and NH3-N deposition. Wet deposition treatments providing similar N doses were established on an adjacent area of bog. These treatments provide N doses at relatively low ionic concentrations and high frequency. Over the last 7 years, there have been dramatic, visible changes in response to ammonia, reminiscent of the changes observed in the Netherlands and less obvious, more subtle changes in response to wet deposition especially where the N has been supplied with PK.
A visit to the bog is planned for Sunday 15 November. The site has boardwalks, but warm clothes are essential and walking boots preferable. Space is very limited – the field trip can accommodate up to 12 people maximum.
